Let's Talk Terps

Terpenes - it's been a buzz word in the cannabis world for years. But what exactly are they? And how will they benefit me?

By definition, terpenes are naturally occurring chemicals found in plants that are responsible for the scent, taste and even colour of their fruits. Their primary use is to attract pollinators to their hosts, but terpenes are bioactive in humans and are mood and sense altering (in a positive way).

In cannabis, terpenes work synergistically to create the 'entourage effect' - their individual properties (some are anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-cancer and ant-spasmodic) are potentiated when consumed together. When consuming CBD with terpenes, participants in a randomised study reported better outcomes than those who consumed isolated CBD. This makes sense, as cannabinoids naturally occur alongside terpenes.

Terps such as citral (included in our relief and calm oils) are found in citrus peel and are potent anti-oxidants. Linalool (found in our relief oil) naturally occurs in lavender and enhances sleep and promotes calmness. Limonene, naturally present in lemons, is energising and anti-inflammatory.

As you can see, we can elicit any physiological response with remarkable consistency by finely engineering products with terpenes. In the same mechanism in which piperine (black pepper) increases the bioavailability of curcumin (turmeric) by a factor of 10, terpenes create a '1+1 = 3' effect when consumed with cannabinoids, such as THC and CBD - the intended effect is much stronger where terpenes are the catalyst.

Conclusively, it is apparent that terpenes play a crucial role in the physiological effect of your CBD oil. Our oils are made with a carefully selected terpene blend, designed to invoke 'calm' and 'relief' according to their respective terpene profiles.
